Many root canal treatments can be done in a single visit. A specialist will apply a local anesthetic to numb the area around the affected tooth. Once the tooth is numb, the dentist will remove the top portion of the tooth and then carefully remove the damaged pulp. Medicine may be added to the chamber to fight off infection and bacteria. A temporary filling will be placed on the tooth until a permanent crown can be fitted to strengthen it
The usual way to know if you need a filling is if you have pain in a tooth. Sometimes you can visually see that there is a hole in your tooth or a break of some sort. A visit to the dentist may include an x-ray to locate cavities that are invisible to the eye. The dentist will use a filling to seal the hole and strengthen the tooth, to avoid further damage that could lead to a root canal.
