What Is Sealant?

Dental sealant act as a barrier on the teeth to prevent cavities. Brushing and flossing is very important when it comes to the prevention of cavities. Unfortunately, the bristles on a toothbrush are not long enough to reach all the way into the grooves to extract the food and plaque. When a patient has a dental sealant applied, the vulnerable areas will be sealed off. When the dentist applies a sealant, they will simply paint it on the tooth enamel of the back teeth where chewing occurs. It will bond and then harden to the cavity prone areas of the teeth.

When Do I Need Sealant?

Sealant holds up quite well under the force of normal chewing, and last several years before the it needs to be reapplied. Children benefit most from this procedure, because they tend to eat more sweets and haven’t had a chance to develop cavities yet. When they have their back teeth sealed, they won’t need to worry about needing filling. Adults who have never had cavities on their back teeth can also benefit from this procedure. By having the sealant applied regularly, adults and children can prevent cavities from developing.
